The sciatic nerve is a large nerve
extending from the lower back down the back of each leg. Sciatica refers to a very
common condition with symptoms such as:
- Pain
in one buttock or leg (often worse when sitting)
- Burning or tingling sensation down the back
of one leg
- Weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot
- A
constant pain in (usually) one buttock
- A shooting pain when attempting to stand up
Sciatica usually affects just one buttock and one leg, with the
pain extending from the lower back all the way down the leg; sometimes including the foot or toes.
The pain from sciatica can vary from occasional and moderately irritating to severe and physically
debilitating. Note that increasing weakness of the affected limb with loss of bladder and/or bowel control
indicates Cauda Equina Syndrome, a serious disorder requiring emergency treatment.
Sciatica is caused by compression of
the sciatic nerve. Some common causes of sciatica include:
-
Lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower
back)
- Degenerative disc disease (breakdown of discs, which act as
cushions between the vertebrae)
- Spondylolisthesis
(a condition in which one vertebra slips forward over another one)
- Pregnancy
Other things that may aggravate your pain include being overweight,
lack of regular exercise, use of high-heeled shoes, or sleeping on too soft of a mattress.
Back, neck and shoulder problems are common because these areas often become injured by sprains
and strains. Additionally, work and lifestyle can introduce things like stress and poor posture into the picture, which also
can lead to pain and stiffness.
Some causes of neck pain include:
- Skeletal abnormalities
- Trauma (e.g. car accidents)
- Degenerative diseases
- Muscle strain
Some causes
of shoulder pain are:
- Muscle strains due to overexertion
- Tendonitis
resulting from overuse
- Frozen shoulder (Adhesive capsulitis)
- Pinched
nerves
These instances of pain and stiffness are good candidates for Shiatsu treatments. Pain, weakness,
numbness and poor circulation can all improve when a regular program of scheduled Shiatsu sessions is followed. If you are choosing to pursue alternative modalities as a way to address these various forms
of pain, you may be one of many who will benefit from Shiatsu. Click the

A word of caution to the reader with regard to previously diagnosed conditions: Shiatsu
is by no means a replacement for medication one might currently be taking by prescription. Quitting taking your medication
"cold turkey" is dangerous. But there are instances of people who were able to reduce their prescription doses (and
even eliminate them altogether) by getting on a regular program of receiving
alternative therapy and continuing to be monitored by their doctor. Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise are also known
to benefit overall health greatly.
